The dataset incorporating information about the surface geology of Finland is a seamless presentation of the surface geology depicting the distribution of both Quaternary and Pre-Quaternary deposits. Soil cover is omitted. The bedrock outcrops in the map of Superficial Geology at a scale of 1:1M are replaced by data from the Bedrock Map of Finland at a scale of 1:1M.

This map shows the sediments close to the surface (or sea bottom), down to a depth of about 5 meters. This map is based on existing maps of the former Rijks Geologische Dienst and, where necessary, supplemented by unpublished data. The sediments are classified according to the new lithostratigraphical legend used by TNO since 1997. This classification is based on lithological and seismological properties, and on stratigraphic position and origin. The age of the sediments is not taken into account in this classification.

The dataset for the Surface Geology of Ireland at a scale of 1:1M was created by generalizing Quaternary mapping at a scale of 1:50 000 published by the GSI and incorporating information from 1:70 000 scale digital mapping of the subsoil by Teagasc.

Geological Map of the Western Carpathians and Adjacent Areas at a scale of 1 : 500 000 compiled by J. Lexa et al.( 2000). The map contains both polyline and polygon layers. The basis used for the compilation of this map is the Geological Map of the Slovak Republic at a scale of 1:500 000, compiled by A. Biely et al.(1996) with amendments derived from the geological maps of the neighbouring countries.

The dataset incorporates the main features of the bedrock geology in Norway. Areas of bedrock are classified according to rock type and age. Dyke swarms, tectonic structures, impact sites, and basalts are also shown. The areas of bedrock are also assigned to tectonic units. The map has been compiled using data acquired during several mapping campaigns carried out over decades and therefore the level of accuracy is variable.
