Aquatic Experimental platform of Rennes and Le Rheu (PEARL)

This platform provide all the tools and skills required for answering fundamental or applied research questions in ecology, ecotoxicology, evolutionary biology, etc. It hosts multidisciplinary programs with applied issues concerning the evolutions of aquatic ecosystems under contrasted stressors: local stress (due to agricultural, industrial, urban activities) and/or global stress (due to climate change, but also to changes in land use or biological invasions).

The PEARL facility consists in:

- an experimental complex of two multipurpose halls (400 m² each), greenhouses (250 m²), an outdoor pond platform (500 m²) and about sixty aquatic mesocosms, located on the Rennes Agrocampus Ouest site.

- A “pond” station of around 30 ponds (total surface of 5ha), in Le Rheu near Rennes.

Statement

PEARL is one of the two research facilities managed by the U3E unit (INRA-1036), particularly dedicated to the study of the continental aquatic ecosystems. Original tools and the skills developed by the staff now allow Pearl to implement multidisciplinary research programs encompassing all the biotic and abiotic components of continental aquatic ecosystems (lotic or lentic).

The « pond » station in Le Rheu has been in operation since 1988. The first experimental installations in Rennes were accessible to the scientific community in 1992. They were completed in 1998 by the aquatic mesocosms and microcosms platform. Since then, the U3E unit ensures the improvement and modernization of all its facilities and associated monitoring instruments.

PEARL is a service of AnaEE-France Infrastructure.
