Maltese Agglomeration, Maltese Zone and PAHs Zone

According to the requirements of Directives 2008/50/EC and 2004/107/EC with respect to the minimum number of sampling points and the assessment regimes, the data set consists of two zones in the Maltese territory, the Air Monitoring Agglomeration and the Air Quality Monitoring Zone in which all main pollutants are being monitored. A third zone covering the monitoring of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) is also included in the data set.

Statement

For ZON-MT0001: The delineation of the agglomeration has been carried out through a study by Stacey and Bush, 2002. In order to delineate the extent of the agglomeration within Malta, the main urban areas and archipelago coastline was assessed within a Geographical Information System. A 100m buffer zone was applied to all urban areas, hence urban areas separated by less than 200m can be highlighted as part of the same continuous urban area. After completion of this analysis, it was identified that the most significant continuous urban area in Malta was comprised of Valletta, Sliema districts and some surrounding environs. This urban area has been identified as the Maltese agglomeration and is assumed to have a population of greater than 250,000 inhabitants as per the requirements of Directive 2008/50/EC. ERA believes that this method is acceptable and in line with the actual situation.

For ZON-MT0002: The delineation of the zone has been carried out through a study by Stacey and Bush, 2002. The Maltese zone comprises of all the other territories and urban areas outside of the agglomeration as per the requirements of Directive 2008/50/EC.

For ZON-MT0003: This zone covers the entire Maltese territory, in which the monitoring of PAHs is carried out according to a standard method defined in the Directive. The analysis of PAHs is carried out in an accredited laboratory.
