Geological Map of Spain and Portugal 1:1 000 000 scale
The geological map of Spain and Portugal at 1:1 000 000 scale is a renewed version of the geological map of the Iberian Peninsula and the territories of Ceuta, Melilla and the Balearic, Canaries, Azores and Madeira islands. This small-scale map is edited jointly periodically by the Geological surveys of Spain (IGME) and Portugal (LNEG). This new version includes for the first time the geological information of the Spanish and Portuguese continental shelves and also the geology of the Atlantic Portuguese islands. This map records all the new geological knowledge provided by the complete survey at 1:50 000 scale in Spain (IGME’s MAGNA Plan) and the systematic geological mapping series developed in Portugal by the LNEG. The continental portion of the map was compiled starting from original drafts at 1:400 000 scale made for every main geological unit: Iberian Variscan Massif, Pyrenees, Betics, Cantabrian and Iberian cordilleras and the Duero, Ebro and Tajo Cenozoic basins for the territory of Spain and the geological maps at 1:200 000 scale in Portugal.

- Purpose
- This map represents an update of the geological map of the Iberian Peninsula and all the island territories of Spain and Portugal at 1:1 000 000 scale. This is the result of the improvement of the geological knowledge represented by the completion of the geological survey at 1:50 000 scale in Spain (IGME’s MAGNA Plan) and the systematic geological mapping series developed in Portugal by the LNEG. It includes for the first time the geological map of the Spanish and Portuguese continental shelves and also the geology of the Atlantic Portuguese islands.

- Specific usage
- The geological map of Spain and Portugal at 1:1 000 000 scale can be used as a tool for dissemination and teaching purposes. It also can be used as a reference publication about the Geology of Spain and Portugal for the elaboration of derived maps at the same scale as hydrogeological, natural hazards or mineral resources maps.

- Statement
- The geological map of Spain and Portugal at 1:1 000 000 scale has been compiled from different sources. The continental portion of the map was compiled starting from original synthesis maps at 1:400 000 scale made for every main geological unit: Iberian Massif, Pyrenees, Betics , Cantabrian and Iberian cordilleras and the Duero, Ebro and Tajo Cenozoic basins for the territory of Spain and the geological maps at 1:200 000 scale in Portugal. A team of experts for each of these units has simplified the original information and compiled it accordingly to a unified legend created for the whole map. The cartography of the island areas was compiled starting from original IGME geological maps of various scales and from geological maps at 1:25 000 and 1:50 000 scales in the case of the Portuguese Atlantic islands. The geological map of the continental margin has been compiled from different cartographic sources of different scales: geological maps of the Spanish continental margin at 1:200 000 scale and the Geological map of the Quaternary at 1:1 000 000 scale, published by the IGME; the geological map of Portugal at 1:1 000 000 scale (LNEG-LGM), including the new version of the Geological map of the Portuguese continental margin at 1:2 000 000 scale. These maps have been complemented with geological data obtained in oceanographic campaigns developed in various research projects in which the IGME and the LNEG were involved and from the project of Spanish Extended Continental Shelf submitted to United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea UNCLOS.
- Description
- Stage 1- Geological maps compilation at several scales produced by IGME and LNEG: 1:25 000, 1:50 000, 1:200 000 and 1:1 000 000 and also 1:500 000 from LNEG.
- Description
- Stage 2 -Elaboration of a cartographic synthesis for each of the major geological units of the Iberian Peninsula: Iberian Massif, Pyrenees, Betics, Cantabrian and Iberian cordilleras and the Duero, Ebro and Tajo Cenozoic basins for the territory of Spain and a synthesis of the geological maps at 1:200 000 scale for the territory of Portugal.
- Description
- Stage 3 - Joining and adjustment of the different regional maps (including the political limits). Delineation of the complete legend and assembly of the entire map
- Description
- Stage 4 - Adaptation of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands territory to the topographic base map BCN1250 ERTS89, FUSE 30, provided by the Spanish Instituto Geográfico Nacional.
- Description
- Stage 5- Digitalization of the Atlantic island territories in their respective projections and fuses, i.e.: REGCAN95 UTM28N for the Canary Islands, AZORES CENTRAL 1995, UTM 28N for the Azores Islands and ITRF93, UTM 28N Projection for the Madeira Islands.
- Description
- Stage 6- The geology of the continental margin was generated in two blocks: Spanish and Portuguese platforms. The Spanish platform was divided in 3 areas: Gulf of Cadiz, Cantabrian and Mediterranean seas, all of they represented in the ED50UTM30N projection, and imported in ArcGis v10. The Portuguese platform was delivered by the LNEG in Transverse Mercator, Fuse 31 projection. All this information was assembled with ArcGis v10 in a project with ERTRS89 UTM30N projection. A final adjustment of the boundaries between the Spanish and Portuguese blocks and between the terrestrial and continental margin domains was needed.
- Description
- Stage 7- Composition and makeup of the printed version of the map made with the software MAPublisher v. 9 for Adobe Illustrator CC2014 departing from ESRI shapefiles.
- Description
- Stage 8- Final integration of the information in a ArcGis v10 File Geodatabase and correction and adaptation to the INSPIRE data model.
- Description
- The different rock units of the map are represented separated by different kind of boundaries. The tectonic structure, faults and trajectories of fold axis are also represented jointly with the dip and strike of planar and linear elements contained in the rock surfaces; structural and textural singularities of the igneous and metamorphic rocks; water occurrences, mines and occurrences of mineral deposits; presence of fossils and other elements of punctual representation.
