Scottish Police Divisions

The Police and Fire Reform (Scotland) Act 2012 dissolved the eight former police and fire areas in to a single service for all of Scotland. Following from this, Police Division boundaries were defined to enable policing at the local level. Police Divisions are based on aggregations of Local Authority areas (defined by Ordnance Survey BoundaryLine), and remain in alignment with Local Authorities as these change.

Statement

The Police and Fire Reform (Scotland) Act 2012 dissolved the eight former police and fire areas in to a single service for all of Scotland, effective from April 1st, 2013. Police Divisions were defined as aggregates of Local Authority boundaries (as in Ordnance Survey BoundaryLine). Changes to division boundaries are made either by an administrative area review to Local Authorities, or by approval from the Scottish Police Authority. Each division is given a GSS (Government Statistical Service) code in the S32000000 format.

In October 2015, following a period of external and internal consultation, a decision was made to strengthen local policing in the North East by creating a single division from the existing Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Moray Divisions. The new North East Division was implemented on 1st January 2016. The creation of a single division was to facilitate a more flexible approach to the deployment of officers which would further enhance operational capabilities, enabling us to strengthen the local policing we provide to the communities across the North East. Current Police Divisions are aggregated from Local Authorities in the following manner:

• Argyll and West Dunbartonshire: Argyll and Bute and West Dunbartonshire

• Ayrshire: East Ayrshire, North Ayrshire, and South Ayrshire

• Dumfries and Galloway: Dumfries and Galloway

• Edinburgh: City of Edinburgh

• Fife: Fife

• Forth Valley: Stirling, Falkirk, and Clackmannanshire

• Greater Glasgow: Glasgow City, East Renfrewshire, and East Dunbartonshire

• Highlands and Islands: Highland, Orkney, Shetland, and Na h-Eileanan Siar

• Lanarkshire: North Lanarkshire and South Lanarkshire

• Lothians and Scottish Borders: West Lothian, East Lothian, Midlothian and Scottish Borders

• North East: Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Moray

• Renfrewshire and Inverclyde: Inverclyde and Renfrewshire

• Tayside: Angus, Dundee City, and Perth and Kinross

A summary of amendments affecting Scottish Police Divisions is as follows:

Effective 2016-01-01 (by approval from Scottish Police Authority):

• Merger of Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire and Moray divisions (North East)

Effective 2018-02-02 (SSI 2017/430):

• Keltybridge and Fife Envirnonmental Energy Park at Westfield

Effective 2019-04-01 (SSI 2018/308):

• Local Authority boundary change at Cardowan

The dataset covers all of Scotland, and is coterminous with Local Authorities (OS BoundaryLine, pre-release May 2019)
