MSFD Descriptor 1: Phytoplankton and Zooplankton Species Composition
The information gathered is part of Descriptor 1 of Commission Decision 2017/848/EU: specifically D1C6 (pelagic habitats). Plankton communities constitute an important component of such water column habitats, forming the base of marine foodwebs. The composition of these communities can provide a good indication of the status of pelagic ecosystems, also because plankton responds to anthropogenic pressures, in particular nutrient enrichment.
In fact, this dataset includes a list of phytoplankton and zooplankton up to the lowest possible taxonomic scale and includes a count of abundance.

The data used emanates from the EU funded project EMFF 8.3.1 under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund 2014-2020 with a total cost of €1.6 million in public eligible EMFF funds (75% EU 25% MT). The ultimate goals of this European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF 2014-2020) project are to devise a holistic approach towards marine monitoring and develop a comprehensive database of data collected about the Maltese waters. The copyright of such data is the property of the project in line with the provisions of CT 3031/2016 and will remain vested in the project in question.
The overall quality of the dataset is good.
For phytoplankton: Niskin bottles were used for the collection of water samples at surface and subsurface depths (1-5m).
For zooplankton: Sampling nets with a flow meter were used.
