Marine Mammals and Seabirds and Turtles: Summer sightings per unit effort of porpoises from Western English Channel Marinelife Surveys

Marinelife sightings per unit effort (SPUE) of live porpoises in the Western English Channel. Surveys recorded sightings of Phocoena phocoena. The data span from 2007 - 2011 and come from both dedicated and opportunistic surveys in the CHARM3 study area. Relative-abundance of porpoises should be viewed with survey effort layers.

Explanation

Marinelife sightings per unit effort (SPUE) of live porpoises in the Western English Channel. The data were provided by Marinelife from a dedicated and opportunistic surveys on a variety of platforms over 5 years. Relative-abundance of porpoises should be viewed with survey effort layers.

Statement

Sightings records were contributed by: Marinelife. Data were filtered to remove obvious location errors (i.e. on land), in poor seastates (>3 Beaufort Scale), from high-speed (ferries), static (dive)vessels, or when chumming occured (fishing). The filtered dataset was then corrected for search effort used to generate survey effort rasters in 0.25 degree resolution. SPUE rasters were then converted to shapefiles.
