Inshore Pot Fishing Activity

Data indicates the location for pot fishing activity in Irish waters. Attributes when known include year, area, gear type, species, season, days per year (Days_Year), number of vessels (Vessels), vessel size (LOA_Max), gear units, classification, Area of polygon (Area_M2), and data type.


This dataset was created in support of the Natura 2000 risk assessment in 2013.


Please note that this dataset represents potting activity of vessels <15 metres length in Irish waters.

The dataset does not provide high resolution location information. The data offers the approximate location of known fishing grounds for the specified gear type using expert knowledge, survey data, and questionnaire data gathered by the Marine Institute.


The attribute table of the dataset provides the following details:


Year: The year in which the data was collected or collated.


Area: The area in which the fishing activity is located in Irish waters. Either; Quigleys Point to Benwee Head, Benwee Head to Slyne Head, Slyne Head to Loop Head, Loop Head to Reen Point, Reen Point to Carnsore Point, or Irish Sea .


Gear_Type: The specific gear type used within the defined polygon.


Species: The species caught within the defined polygon.


Season: Season or monthly range during which the defined fishing location is active.


Days_Year: Number of days per year the defined fishing activity occurs.


Vessels: Number of vessels known to carry out defined fishing activity.


LOA_Max: Length of vessel (metres).


Gear_Units: Number of gear units used by vessel.


Classification: Whether or not area is classified for harvesting of bivalve molluscs.


Area_M2: Area of defined polygon calculated in ArcGIS in Irish Transverse Mercator projection.


Data_Type: Three different types of data were used to create the dataset. 'Survey Data' is interpolated digitised data from Marine Institute Shellfish point or line survey data and provides information on stock distribution and not fishery activity. The fishery data corresponding to the survey area is collated independently from fishery licence information or local information on fishing activity in that area. 'Expert Data' has been digitised using knowledge collated from state agency personnel or fishermen who are familiar with the location and character of fisheries at local level. This provides information at fleet level for each particular gear type. 'Questionnaire Data' has been digitised from data provided by individual fishermen through questionnaires and this provides information at individual vessel level.
